Apple Pay FAQs

What is Apple Pay?

Apple Pay ® is a new way to pay without ever swiping your credit or debit cards. Use your iPhone ® or Apple Watch ® to pay for in-store purchases at merchants equipped with contactless Near Field Communication (NFC) checkout terminals. Or pay online within participating apps without entering payment and contact information using your compatible Apple devices. A simple touch of your finger using Touch ID ® or double-click of the side button on your Apple Watch completes the transaction.

Is Apple Pay secure?

Yes! With the traditional way of paying, every time you use your credit or debit cards to pay, your card numbers and identity are visible. With Apple Pay, your credit/debit cards are never visible. Instead, a unique Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted and securely stored in a dedicated chip. Make a purchase and the Device Account Number (along with a transaction-specific dynamic security code) is used to process your payment. Your actual card numbers are never shared with merchants or transmitted with payments. Cashiers never see your name, card numbers or security code.

Plus, as another layer of security, Apple Pay utilizes Touch ID. What’s Touch ID? It’s a biometric identification, which is just a fancy name for using your fingerprints to identify you. With Apple Pay and Touch ID, you pay with a single touch of your finger. Your fingerprint is used as your password, and because your fingerprint is unique to you, no one else can make a purchase using your device.

How do I enroll in Apple Pay?

There are a few different ways to enroll your cards in Apple Pay.

My Vantage credit or debit card is already linked to my iTunes account:
Before you begin enrollment through this method, be sure your information on file at Vantage (phone number, email/mailing address) is up-to-date. If there is a discrepancy, it may delay your enrollment. The information on your monthly Vantage statements should be the same as your current account information in iTunes. To update iTunes, follow the step-by-step instructions provided by Apple on their website.

To enroll your existing linked iTunes credit or debit card with Apply Pay: (recommended method)

  1. Launch the Passbook app
  2. You may be prompted to enter your iTunes password
  3. Swipe down to reveal the + button
  4. Tap on the + button
  5. Choose ‘Use card on file with iTunes’
  6. Enter the card’s three digit security code and select Next
  7. Accept the terms and conditions

My Vantage credit or debit card is not linked to iTunes and this is the first time I’m adding a card to Apple Pay:

  1. Launch the Passbook app and select ‘Set Up Apple Pay’
  2. Select Add a new Credit or Debit Card
  3. Enter your card information *
  4. Enter the card’s three digit security code and select Next
  5. Accept the terms and conditions
  6. You’ll receive notification within the app requiring you to call Vantage 800.522.6009 and answer verification questions to protect you from fraudulent transactions, at which time your card will be activated in Apple Pay

I already have a card enrolled in Apple Pay, but I want to add another:

  1. Launch the Passbook app
  2. Swipe down to reveal the + button in the top right
  3. Tap on the + button
  4. Select ‘Add Another Card’
  5. Enter your card information *
  6. Enter the card’s three digit security code and select Next
  7. Accept the terms and conditions
  8. If your card is not linked to iTunes, you’ll receive notification within the app requiring you to call Vantage 800.522.6009 and answer verification questions to protect you from fraudulent transactions, at which time your card will be activated in Apple Pay

* Please Note: There is an option to take a photo of your card. Apple Pay’s photo-detection only works with embossed numbers. If your credit or debit card has flat numbers (like on your Vantage Mastercard), you will have to enter your information manually.

I’m already using Apple Pay with another credit card/debit card. How do I make my Vantage Mastercard credit card or Vantage debit card my default Apple Pay card?

The first card you enter into Apple Pay automatically becomes your default card, but you can easily change the default. After adding your Vantage credit or debit card to Apple Pay (see instructions above), go to your device’s Settings, open “Passbook & Apple Pay,” then “Default Card” and select the Vantage credit or debit card from the list of cards you’ve enrolled as your default card.

Can more than one person (example: husband/wife) add a card to Apple Pay using different iPhones?

Yes. Just add the additional card(s) as instructed above.

How many cards can be added to Apple Pay?

Eight.

How do I arrange my cards in Passbook so my Vantage card is on top?

  1. Launch the Passbook app on your iPhone
  2. Press and hold the card you’d like to move
  3. Drag it to the position you want it in and release it

The image displayed for my Vantage Mastercard credit card or Vantage debit card does not look like my actual card. Why?

Apple Pay displays default images for all Vantage credit and debit cards. They are graphical representations and may not match the design of your card exactly.

What if I have a problem enrolling my card in Apple Pay?

If you cannot enroll your credit or debit card in Apple Pay, call Card Services at 314.298.0055 or 800.522.6009 for credit assistance during business hours.

After business hours:
To enroll a credit or debit card, call 855.553.4291.

After I enroll in Apple Pay, do I still need to carry my Vantage Mastercard credit card or Vantage debit card?

Yes. Not all retail outlets accept Apple Pay at this time, so you’ll need your cards for making purchases at those merchants.

Which merchants are participating with Apple Pay?

Apple Pay is accepted at hundreds of thousands of locations and counting. And you can use Apple Pay to pay in some of the most popular apps in the App Store. Here’s the list of merchants and apps currently accepting Apple Pay.

How do I know if I can use Apple Pay at a merchant’s checkout terminals?

Look for these symbols at checkout.

You may find some checkout terminals that display one of these symbols even though the retailer is not yet set up to accept payments from Apple Pay. If you can’t use Apple Pay at a merchant that is displaying the contactless payment symbol, please contact Apple for assistance.

How do I know if I can use Apple Pay to make a purchase in an app?

Participating merchants and apps will display an “Apple Pay” or “Buy with Apple Pay” button.

How do I use Apple Pay in an app?

To pay within participating apps, checking out is as easy as selecting the ‘Buy with Apple Pay’ or ‘Apple Pay’ button. Then review your information and place your finger on Touch ID or double-click the side button on your Apple Watch.

How do I use Apple Pay at a merchant?

If the payment terminal is enabled for Apple Pay use, all you need to do to pay is hold your phone up to the checkout terminal and put your finger on the Touch ID sensor at the bottom of your phone (the card you want to use must be selected in Passbook). Or, if you’re using your Apple Watch, hold it near the checkout terminal and double-click the side button. Your iPhone of Apple Watch will vibrate lightly and you may hear a beep from the merchant’s terminal to let you know your payment information was successfully sent.

Please note: Although your iPhone screen will display a fingerprint image to prompt you to place your finger on the Touch ID sensor, that fingerprint image is a prompt only. To finalize your Apple Pay transaction, you must place your finger on the Touch ID sensor at the bottom of your phone, not on the fingerprint image on the screen.

Should I choose “debit” or “credit” when I check out using my debit card in Apple Pay?

We recommend that you select “credit” even when paying with a debit card as some older merchant payment terminals and backend systems may not always work successfully.

Is Apple Pay free to use?

Yes! But while Apple Pay is FREE, be aware that smartphone data charges may apply, depending on your carrier and data plan.

Can I opt out of Apple Pay at any time?

Yes. You can change the default card, update your card information, or remove a card at any time. Simply go to Settings, then Passbook & Apple Pay.

How does Apple Pay protect my payment information?

When you complete a transaction using Apple Pay, your name, card number and security code remain private. You don’t give your physical card to anyone, and Apple doesn’t share your actual card numbers with retailers. Instead, they receive a transaction-specific code to process your payment. And because that code can only be used once, your accounts are better protected against fraud.

What if my iPhone is lost or stolen?

Go to icloud.com/find, provide your Apple ID and Password and use “Find My iPhone” to put your device in Lost Mode to suspend Apple Pay. Please note that the “Find My iPhone” app must be enabled on your device in order for it to be located with the app. It can be enabled in iCloud settings on your device. We highly recommend that you install and enable the “Find My iPhone” app.

What if I lose my Vantage Mastercard credit card or Vantage debit card?

If you lose your credit card or debit card, you should immediately inform Vantage so we can cancel it and send you a replacement card.

Call 314.298.0055 or 800.522.6009 during business hours.
For a lost credit card after business hours, call 800.449.7728.
For a lost debit card after business hours, call 866.820.8792.

You will no longer be able to use the lost card in Apple Pay after the card is canceled. After you receive your replacement card, you’ll need to add that new card into Apple Pay (by entering your payment details into the Passbook app as described above).

If I lose my phone and suspend Apple Pay, can I still use my Vantage credit or debit card in stores?

Yes. When you suspend Apple Pay, your device-specific Device Account Number is suspended, but your card is not affected, so you can continue to use it outside of Apple Pay.

Do I still earn reward points when I use my Vantage World Mastercard or Platinum Rewards Mastercard in Apple Pay?

Yes. Transactions made using your Vantage World Mastercard or Platinum Rewards Mastercard through Apple Pay earn rewards just as they do when you use your physical card at a checkout terminal or online.

Only one purchase was displayed in Passbook. How can I see the rest of my payment history?

Passbook displays only the most recent transaction. To view the last 10 Apple Pay transactions made with your registered card, click on the information button (a lower-case letter “i” in a circle) at the bottom right of the Passbook screen. To view a full transaction history for your Vantage credit or debit card, log in to the eBranch.

Why does the amount shown in Passbook not match the amount on my credit card statement?

Locations such as restaurants, gas service stations and hotels may show up as different transaction amounts because the amount shown in Passbook is the initial authorization amount, which might be different from the final transaction amount. For example, Passbook may display the amount a restaurant submitted initially before you added a tip when you signed your receipt. Always refer to your Vantage statements for final transaction details.

Will I still have to sign a receipt when I make a purchase using Apple Pay?

For most purchases, you will not sign a receipt when using Apple Pay; however, there may be times when you will need to sign, depending on the merchant and the transaction amount.
