Soak up some fun—and keep it safe—while boating this summer
With an estimated 125,000 lakes* in the lower 48 states, there’s plenty of opportunity to enjoy a boat or watercraft. Do your summer plans include spending time on the water? It’s a great way to experience the outdoors and spend time with friends and family. Better yet, it can be good for your physical and mental health!
While boating is a great escape from the everyday, a little preparation goes a long way to ensure your time spent on the water is not only fun but safe as well.
Before you launch
Whether you’re renting a boat or it’s one you own, check your equipment and make sure it’s in good working order before you leave the dock. Have a tool kit, first-aid kit and fire extinguisher on board, in addition to life jackets for all riders. Leave a float plan with a trusted individual who won’t be aboard. And don’t forget sunscreen.
On the water
When you’re on the water, common sense is your best friend. Have fun but respect the limits of safety. Don’t drink and drive a boat. Stay hydrated and pay attention for the signs of heat-related illnesses. Keep an eye to the skies; if you notice storm clouds, a drop in temperature or an increase in wind speed, play it safe and get off the water.
For the adventure seeker
Water skiing, tubing and wakeboarding are popular water sports. First and foremost, to minimize risk of injury, always wear a life jacket. Learn to safely use the tow rope and check the towline to make sure it’s not caught in the propeller or wrapped around you prior to beginning. Wait for the propeller to stop before getting back on the boat. Always have a spotter and use basic hand signals to communicate with that person. And remember, daylight is the safest time to enjoy these activities.
Unseen protection
Don’t forget about proper insurance coverage. In 2022 alone, the Coast Guard counted over 4,000 accidents that involved more than 2,200 injuries and approximately $64 million in property damage as a result of recreational boating accidents.^
